Late-afternoon sun sits low in the sky, so it shines almost straight through west-facing glass instead of glancing off it, and it arrives when the day is already at its hottest. Eaves and overhangs don't block much of it. The result is a room that heats up every afternoon, glare on TVs and screens, and floors and furniture that fade near the window.
Heat rejection: how much of the sun's total energy the film keeps out. This is the main number for a west window.
Glare reduction: how much visible light the film cuts. More reduction means less squinting, with a slightly darker room.
A clear view: how the film looks from inside, so you still enjoy the view.
UV protection: look for film that blocks up to 99% of UV rays.
Neutral films keep a nearly clear look and take the edge off heat and glare, which works well when you want the room to stay bright. Reflective and dual-reflective films reject the most heat and glare and add daytime privacy. Dual-reflective films are less mirrored on the inside, so the view out stays clear. We bring samples and hold them up to your own west windows so you can see the difference in real afternoon light.
Film on double-pane and low-E glass has to be matched to the glass type, so the glass isn't put under too much heat stress. We check every window before recommending a film.
Home window film in Omaha runs $8–$12 per square foot installed, scaffolding included.
